Soak up the atmosphere of this funky restaurant in its historic location dating back to 1878. The brick shop with timber front was built by Jas. McCulloch, Henry Hopwood’s son-in-law and this rare surviving building has had a number of lives leading up to this current make-over.
Monkee & Co serves traditional and modern Asian dishes with flavours from Vietnam, China, Malaysia & Thailand – perfect for the urban and country foodie.
Monkee & Co is an expression of our love and passion for Asian food. In our travels through Asia, we have both developed a respect for its culture and an understanding of the many different cuisines each country has to offer. Monkee & Co is a modern interpretation of the much loved street vendor food of Asia and brings a new food experience and new food stories, making them so interesting.
The style of food is designed to be shared in a fun way – an adaptation of the Asian hawker-style street market food. Shared food and communal dining with close friends and family is very much the way of the Asian community, and this is the major inspiration for the ‘Monkee’ experience.
To understand the philosophy of Asian cooking is to understand first of all the components used to create a masterpiece of flavour and texture – the balance of hot, sweet, sour and salty flavours with exciting underlying textures. Magic is created in each dish by understanding not only flavour combinations but also textures, colours and cooking methods. Success comes from combining fried and steamed food – pairing crisp with soft, hot with sour and sweet with salt.
Enjoy the experience.
